Duke of Edinburgh by Jess

During the past month, a handful of learners have been taking part in an online course called Duke Of Edinburgh bronze award. In this course, there are 4 outcomes that need to be completed. Physical recreation, Skills, Service, and the Adventurous Journey. To complete these sections the learner has to choose and create an outcome to complete. For example, my skills outcome is creative writing, I will write 30 000 words in a book I am writing with another learner. I need to complete 13 hours of work on this topic only being able to log 1 hour per week (so over a 13-week span). One of the other Blue Sky learners who is taking part in Duke Of Ed said “I really like how they have it all formatted out because it's really easy to use, I think it's a really important experience for people to try out because it kinda pushes you to try and you learn and develop skills on your way”. This contest shows that you have determination, perseverance, and dedication. It's well recognized in...

Theme Park Designs - by Jess

Image
During the Discovery Weeks at Blue Sky, we had the experience of doing a Design Sprint that would allow us to create our own theme park. The inspiration came from Shauna's love for Disney design. To pique our interest, she told us about the history of Walt Disney and all his projects. After Shauna had clicked the creative switch inside all of our brains, we couldn't wait to get started. We learned about the audiences we were targeting, brainstormed and constructed ideas. Finally, we made our way to the final steps, prototyping and testing. Each of us students took our ideas and started forming them into a visible creation. Some designs were 3D others were blueprints, some learners did brochures and others did drawings. It was as if our school had turned into a creative warehouse of amazing ideas and imagination. Once everyone was done prototyping, it was time to see if others liked our theme parks, the final stage had begun. Each learner had the chance to pitch their th...

Reflections of a new Blue Sky Learner - by Jess Rice

Reflections Of A New Blue Sky Learner By Jessica Rice As a new Blue Sky learner, it has been my responsibility to learn how the school works and if I feel comfortable and safe here. After just one month at Blue Sky, I realize that the environment has helped me so much. Instead of sitting in a class of 30 kids with one teacher, there are enough coaches for everyone to get the help they need. Because there are so many coaches, it’s really easy to base your education and learning around your personal interests. My whole project is on animals, and because I’m learning through something I love, it is a lot more motivating and exiting. At Blue Sky, I can get the help I need with my work, and that is why I don’t feel stressed. When I first visited Blue Sky School, I didn't expect it to be a regular school, however, I also didn’t expect it to be as awesome as it is. I have anxiety, so I have good days and bad days. Last week I had a very bad day, a good friend came in to the room I...
